Webinar: Radon education in geographically challenging and geologically dynamic Alaska

Speaker: Jennifer E. Athey

January is National Radon Action Month! It’s a great time to think about protecting yourself and your family from this naturally occurring, radioactive, cancer-causing gas, and remind others to take action as well. Especially with the uncertainty and stress caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s natural to feel that situations affecting our health are out of our personal control. Radon, however, is one hazard we don’t have to live with. Simple and inexpensive tests can identify radon in your home, and most homes can be mitigated to ensure radon cannot enter. This presentation will include general information about radon and then focus on radon education and outreach in Alaska, which is challenging because of Alaska’s geography, climate, remote areas, and complex and dynamic geology. Earthquakes, climate change, and related hazards are particularly relevant in this context. Despite Alaska’s uniqueness as a state, there are lessons to be learned in the Last Frontier that apply to the contiguous U.S. Alaska’s radon program history and recent work will be discussed with these takeaways in mind.
