Committee Descriptions

Advocacy Committee 
The AEG Advocacy Committee provides ideas, insight, and tools for all members of AEG to become advocates for the professions of environmental and engineering geology. The committee recognizes that there are many audiences who need to know about our profession, and each audience hears our message from different perspectives. These audiences include legislators and the voters who elect them; industry decision-makers and project owners; collateral professionals; educators, from K-12 through post-graduate; the general public; and the next generation of geoscience professionals. The AEG Advocacy Committee also recognizes its role as facilitator for the Association Liaison Representatives.

Annual Meeting Committee
Individual meeting committees are appointed by the host chapter to plan and carry out the activities of each Annual Meeting. The committee is formed usually two or three years ahead of the Annual Meeting and carries through the final report, generally six months following the Annual Meeting. Each committee is responsible for the financial, logistical, and technical planning of an Annual Meeting and is expected to report progress to the Board at stated intervals.

Meetings Advisory Committee
The Meetings Advisory Committee provides guidance and technical assistance to the current Annual Meeting Committee and any other nationally sponsored conference. The committee also maintains a continuity of experience and management of the association's national meetings. The committee updates the Annual Meeting Guidebook following each meeting to ensure its accuracy. This committee is also responsible for the development and implementation of the strategies related to national meeting goals in the association's strategic plan.

Awards Committee
The Awards Committee is responsible for the Claire P. Holdredge Award, which is given to an AEG member who publishes a paper deemed to be an outstanding contribution to Engineering Geology; the Floyd T. Johnston Service Award, which recognizes outstanding service to the association by a member to the association; and the Douglas R. Piteau Outstanding Young Member Award for exceptional achievement in Engineering Geology by an AEG member under 35 years of age.

Chapter Support Committee 
The Chapter Support Committee is responsible for actively assisting and supporting chapters and their programs. In addition, the committee is responsible for the development and implementation of the strategies related to chapter support goals in the association's Strategic Plan. The chapter support committee also updates and distributes the Chapter Chair’s Annual Report form; and then receives the chapter reports. An independent committee then reviews the reports and chooses which chapter(s) receive awards at the Annual Meeting.

The Communications Committee oversees publications and the website, and is responsible for maintaining their continuing quality. They advise the Executive Council and Board of ways that publications and other media may be improved; and initiate and respond to proposals for enhancing communications within the association and with outside audiences. Members of the committee include the co-directors, the publications/media managers, and other interested members; the committee is overseen by the association Vice President.

AEG Publications (most distributed primarily or exclusively in digital form)

Environmental & Engineering Geoscience (E&EG)Published for more than 30 years as the Bulletin of the Association of Engineering Geologists, the authoritative journal in its field; renamed in 1995. It became a joint publication of AEG and the Geological Society of America, and was broadened to include articles on topics in the applied environmental and hydrological geosciences. E&EG contains new theory, applications, and case histories illustrating the dynamics of the fast-growing applied environmental and engineering disciplines. It continues familiar features such as the Geology of Cities series, offering scientific insights into geological factors controlling urban challenges and opportunities; technical notes on current topics; a comment and reply forum for discussion among authors and readers; memorials to geologists of note; and book reviews of interest to practicing professionals. Four issues are published annually, with about 500 pages total.

AEG News - The association's news publication contains information on the profession, reports on committee and chapter activities, messages from the President and other officers, short technical articles, and other information of interest to the membership.

Annual Report & Directory of the Association of Engineering Geologists Includes annual reports of Association officers, awards, sponsors, members’ contact information, chapter rosters, links to the Constitution, Bylaws, and Policy Statements, and other association information. The Directory is published annually in March.

Annual Meeting Program with Abstracts – Published annually in advance of AEG’s Annual Meeting, this special issues includes greetings, meeting schedules, hotel and city information, conference and exhibit room locations, exhibitors and sponsors.

Special Publications - Focus on specific topics of interest and value to practicing professionals in the fields of engineering, environmental and groundwater geology. Communications Committee and Special Publications Manager (coordinating with Technical Working Group managers) oversee publications from initial concept and analysis of interest, through editing, production and distribution. The committee is responsible for obtaining Executive Council approval for proposed publications, and establishes document formats and quality control procedures for approved publications.

Geology of Cities - The "Cities of the World" technical papers explain (in long form) the engineering and/or environmental geologic factors controlling challenges and opportunities in major world urban centers. The articles have appeared since 1982 in the AEG Bulletin, later in Environmental & Engineering Geoscience, and soon in e-book format. Manuscripts for the series are managed by the Cities Manager as well as subcommittees of volunteer reviewers.

AEG Insider - AEG's weekly e-mail newsletter is sent to members and non-member subscribers each Thursday. It contains association news, short articles and links to interesting stories relating to applied geology.

Finance Committee

The Finance Committee's primary mission is to review the budget of AEG and advise and educate BOD and AEG members about financial matters independent of the Executive Council.

Governance Committee
The Governance Committee is charged with reporting to the Board of Directors on the following aspects: 1) review and summarize options for governance structure, policy, and bylaws, 2) provide training and monitor performance of the BOD and Executive Council, and 3) interact with the BOD, EC and other associated committees. The committee is made up of current and/or former BOD members not serving on the EC.

Honorary Member Screening Committee
The Honorary Member Screening Committee consists of the President as Chair, two immediate Past Presidents, and two Honorary Members appointed by the President. The committee reviews Honorary Member nominations based on the defined criteria and makes a recommendation to the Board for approval.

K-12 Education Committee
The K-12 Education Committee advocates the science of geology in K-12 education. The committee is responsible for leading initiatives in K-12 education, being responsive to K-12 issues, and advocating the professions within the geologic sciences to students and educators. When a new member joins the committee, their background and experience helps to provide opportunities for implementation of innovative solutions to K-12 geoscience issues, resulting in a better geology education for children.

Licensure Committee
The Licensure Committee’s primary function is to provide the association with guidance and support in its implementation of the AEG Policy on Licensure.  The committee has prepared a Licensure Resources link to on AEG’s website that includes Information and instructions on the legislative process, guidelines for preparing a licensure act, recommended licensure act contents, lobbying, historical documents, and a members-only resources link that contains information and instructions on obtaining assistance from AEG’s Professional Legislative Support Fund (PLSF), PLSF application forms, and example letters that have been submitted to government officials in the past regarding issues related to the practice of geology.  For additional information, including assistance in the use of this information, contact the co-chairs.

Nominations Committee
The Nominating Committee is chaired by the immediate past President and composed of the last three past Presidents of AEG who are willing to serve and one representative each from the Governance Committee and the Strategic Initiatives Committee. The committee solicits the membership for prospective candidates for AEG officer positions and submits to the Board, through a communication delivered to the President no less than 45 days before the midyear meeting, a report detailing the slate of vetted candidates, the Nominating Committee’s endorsed candidate for each office, and other information required by the Board.

Strategic Initiative Coordinators
The Strategic Initiative Coordinators are charged with coordinating successful implementation of AEG's Strategic Plan, as well as reviewing and updating the Strategic Plan on a regular basis.

Student & Young Professional Support Committee
The Student & Young Professional Support Committee is responsible for the development and implementation of strategies related to supporting and increasing student and young professional members, and related goals in the association's Strategic Plan.

AEG's Student and Young Professional Support Committee accepts applications for the young professional and educator travel grants for the AEG Annual Meeting. Applications are due July 31 (deadline extended beyond what's shown on the applications.) These grants are for $500 each and are awarded to current members based on meeting involvement and need. We hope these grants can help some of your members, who might not otherwise be able to attend, to make it to San Francisco this September!
