The global climate is changing and is escalating threats to infrastructure from more extensive flooding and wind damage; extremes in temperature, heat waves, and droughts; increases in wildfires, permafrost thaw, and dust storms; sea level rise; and impaired ecosystems. The earth scientists and geo-engineering community of practice must upgrade its knowledge, skills, and attitudes to implement civil infrastructure that is resilient, sustainable, and efficient in an environment affected by a changing climate. This presentation provides introductory discussion to address the following questions in regard to changing climatic conditions, civil infrastructure, and geological/geotechnical engineering practice:
- What’s happening?
- Why do we care?
- What have others said about this?
- What can we do? And
- Where do we go from here?
