Saturday, November 6, 2021 – 9:00 AM “Mini” Earthquake Insight Field Trip

Meet at Holy Family Catholic Church (built in 1789), and a survivor of the 1811-12 New Madrid earthquakes.  Church is located immediately south of the intersection of Mississippi Avenue (Illinois Highway 3) and Camp Jackson Road in Cahokia, Ill.

Route includes Mississippi River floodplain, mined space (Rock City), Valmeyer (town that moved from the Mississippi floodplain to the adjacent uplands after the 1993 Great Flood); Kaskaskia, Ill.; Ste. Genevieve, Mo., and more structures that survived the 1811-12 New Madrid earthquakes; karst surface near Ste. Genevieve; and overview of the Holcim cement mine (tentative) near Ste. Genevieve, Mo.

Carpools suggested (no bus or common carrier).  Bring your own lunch and soft beverages (only).  Dismissal should be by about 3:00-4:00 pm.

PLEASE RSVP to Phyllis Steckel, RG ([email protected]).  Participants will be sent a copy of the road log and narrative that can be shared within each vehicle as the group travels through the route.  It is planned that a "setting the stage" presentation will be available via Zoom a few days before this field trip to those who RSVP.
