Locating near-surface faults can be challenging, particularly for blind faults in areas with high erosional/sedimentation rates or in highly urbanized settings, where urbanization can obscure geomorphic evidence of the faults. Yet, active blind faults can represent major hazards to large populations and/or critical facilities, such as buildings, bridges, and pipelines.  Active-source seismic methods, including tomographic Vp/Vs ratio imaging, PGV of guided-waves evaluation, surface-wave analysis, reflection imaging, and combined seismic methods, can be used to identify, explore, and laterally trace near-surface faults and their effects on near-surface features, such as ground water. I present examples of active-source seismic fault exploration and evaluation of multiple fault zones, including parts of the San Andreas, West Napa, Raymond, Hollywood, and Ridgecrest faults in California and the HZGLY fault in Beijing, China. Various combinations of these techniques can be applied in most terrestrial fault zones worldwide, and the resulting information can be useful in mitigating earthquake hazards.
