Coal ash and storage techniques were brought into the spotlight for the general public and regulators with the country wide news coverage on the failure of the 2008 TVA Kingston Plant’s coal ash pond.  Coal ash basics, coal ash disposal practices, general design options for in place closures, and some of the main learning points since the 2008 ash pond failure will be discussed including site specific examples.  This presentation is intended for the general public, geologists, engineers, and scientists that may not have a lot of exposure to the topic.
