Chapter Webinar: A Geotechnical and Remote Sensing Approach to Monitor Rock Slope Stability within a Railroad Corridor near Caliente, Nevada

Dr. El Hachemi Bouali, Assistant Professor of Geosciences at Nevada State College, will give a PowerPoint presentation describing geotechnical and remote sensing work conducted along a railroad corridor in southeastern Nevada, near Caliente. A flash flood destroyed railway infrastructure in 2004 and, subsequently, destabilized a rock slope that experienced major rockfall events in December 2004 and January 2005. Since then, sporadic rockfalls have occurred in this area, some directly impacting the railway and other nearby infrastructure. This talk will discuss efforts made to better understand slope dynamics using a variety of techniques and procedures, including developing a railroad corridor variant of the Rockfall Hazard Rating System, acquiring optical imagery from multiple view angles for full slope coverage, calculate changes in slope geometry using two LiDAR point clouds to identify rockfall source areas, and using InSAR to measure long-term slope deformation.
