Chicago Chapter Webinar- Shortcuts in the Profession: Soil Boring Logs

Speakers: Dr. Timothy Kemmis and Dr. Chris Stohr

When the late Dr. Ralph Peck used to come back to the University of Illinois, he would always present a lecture on a project failure, and that failure was always because the geology was misunderstood. What correctly characterizes the geology? Complete and accurate soil descriptions. Today’s standard-of-practice boring logs, differing little from those of 50 years ago, contain important, useful information. The problem is, they fail to include the information necessary to determine the geology. To elevate the profession’s standards, this presentation will look at standard-of-practice boring logs and the quick, simple information that must be added so that the geology can be determined. This can lead to better, more cost-effective achievement of project objectives by better pinpointing any problematic aspects of the geology as well as avoiding expensive engineering over-design.
