Mr. Kuhne’s Abstract

This site at mile marker 7 on I-40 had been identified for decades as a textbook planar failure in-waiting. By 2013, the site had failed twice, blocking the westbound travel lanes, and required yearly inspection and maintenance in the form of seasonal slope scaling. Fortunately the two major incidents occurred while the interstate was under closure for other reasons. NCDOT decided the situation risk was intolerable and instigated an improvement project to re-engineer the slope. The slope exhibits imperfect planar failure conditions and required design and construction details to deal with future rockfall, even though the primary threat was removed. This presentation will examine design inputs, final design considerations and construction items required to construct a safe rock slope with an emphasis on how NCDOT approaches rock slope design in general. This project was completed in 2016.
