Presentation Abstract:
As properties undergo multiple cycles of redevelopment in the Seattle, Tacoma, and Bellevue areas, different types of industrial and commercial subsurface contamination are often found at any given site. Mixtures of heavy metal, petroleum compound, solvent and other contamination found in soil and groundwater at project sites present unique environmental engineering challenges.

Designing cost-effective remediation strategies for these complicated properties serves three goals: 1) to increase the property value for owners, 2) to allow cities to maintain or increase their buildable land, and 3) to improve environmental health and stop contamination plumes from spreading to neighboring properties or into local waterways. We’ll present several case studies of how property contamination was discovered, characterized, remediated and how the land was ultimately able to be reused. Join us for 30 minutes of feel-good environmental stories that have happy endings!
