Member Type Definitions

Full Member

Applicant for Full membership shall include education and/or practice in geological sciences, or related fields as defined by the Association and stated in the Association's Policies and Procedures. The educational requirements shall include graduation from a regionally accredited college or university and fulfillment of one of the following requirements:

1. A degree in the geological sciences from a college or university having a geological science program acceptable to the Association.

2. A degree in a related or allied professional field and completion of thirty (30) semester hours in the geological sciences from a college or university having a geological science program acceptable to the Association.

3. At the discretion of the Board, credit hours earned in non-geological science programs may be deemed equivalent to those earned in an acceptable geological science department.

Affiliate Member

Applicants for Affiliate membership are persons who do not meet the educational requirements for Full membership but are interested in furthering the applied geosciences. Affiliate members shall have the rights and privileges of the Association except that Affiliate members are not eligible to serve on the Executive Council, on the Board, as a Chapter Chair or ChapterTreasurer or to advertise their affiliation with the Association, other than as an Affiliate member on professional business cards, stationary, email signatures, or in professional reports and publications. 

International Member

International members are persons who meet the requirements for Full member but who maintain their primary residence in a country other than the United States or are temporarily residing in the United States but are not citizens of the United States and are not associated with a Consolidated Chapter. International members shall have the rights and privileges of a Full member.

International members are exempt from receiving paper publications, however, are entitled to receive electronically distributed publications.

Student Member

Student members shall, at the time of admission or renewal, be enrolled as a full-time student as defined by their University and be willing to provide a copy of a valid college/university identification card upon request.

Upon graduation or upon reaching the 8-year limit (whichever occurs first), will transition to an Associate member (Post-Graduate Full member).

Student members shall have the right to vote, hold office, chair or serve on committees in any Student Chapter or sub-chapter, and manage or serve on Chapter committees or serve on Association committees. Student members are not eligible to serve on the Executive Council, on the Board, as Chapter Chair or Chapter Treasurer or to advertise their affiliation with the Association committees.

Student members are exempt from both annual Association and their local Chapter dues.

International Student Member

Teacher Member

Applicants are persons who maintain, or are retired from, full-time vocation in the education of primary, secondary, and college/university students. 

Teacher members shall have the right to participate on Chapter Committees, but are not eligible to vote or hold office on the Chapter or National level, serve on the Executive Council or Board, or to advertise their affiliation with the Association, other than as a Teacher member, on professional business cards, stationery, email signatures, or in professional reports and publications.
