Scott A. Anderson has been named the 2016-2017 Richard H. Jahns Distinguished Lecturer in Applied Geology. The Jahns Distinguished Lectureship, established in 1988, is sponsored by the Association of Environmental and Engineering Geologists and the GSA Engineering Geology Division. Its purpose is to provide funding for distinguished engineering geologists to present lectures at colleges and universities in order to increase awareness of students about careers in engineering geology. The lectureship is named in honor of Dr. Richard H. Jahns (1915- 1983), an engineering geologist who had a diverse and distinguished career in academia, consulting and government.
Dr. Anderson is the Geotechnical Engineering Technical Services Team Manager for the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) Resource Center. He leads a national team of geotechnical engineers that assist state and local transportation agencies through technical assistance, training and the deployment of new technologies. Prior to joining FHWA he advanced from Staff Geologist to Senior Consulting Engineer and Landslide Technology Leader for a major A/E design firm and spent four years as an Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Hawaii. He earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in engineering geology from the University of Colorado at Boulder and Colorado State University, and Master’s and Doctorate degrees in civil engineering from the University of California at Berkeley. He is a licensed engineer and practicing engineering geologist with over 30 years of experience and approximately 100 publications and invited presentations, and he makes his home in Colorado.
Dr. Anderson will plan to have lectures related to:
- Natural hazards, risk, and the resilience of the built environment, especially highways
- How engineering geology relates to the needs of those owning and maintaining infrastructure
- Visions of future opportunities for site and event characterization using remote sensing and social media
- Technical observations from the 2014 SR 530 (Oso) Landslide reconnaissance
