HAGS/AEG October Meeting
October 15, 2015
MEETING TOPIC: A Geologic "Perfect Storm" of Very High Radon in the Center Valley/Coopersburg area of Lehigh County, PA
Presented by: David Allard, PA DEP Bureau of Radiation Protection and
Robert Smith, retired - PA Geological Survey
Abstract: In September 2014, a radon mitigation contractor informed DEP of high radon readings located in a newer housing development in an area of Lehigh County just south of the Reading Prong. Subsequent testing revealed readings up to 3700 pCi/L – a new state (and perhaps US) record. [The EPA recommends mitigation for readings >4 pCi/L.]
This presentation will generally cover radon in PA, as well as detail the outreach, testing efforts and findings for this residential area. It will also include a summary of the area’s relationship to the Reading Prong, and mineralogy, geochemistry, & radionuclide distribution in the soil profile, as well as relationships to out-of-state uranium occurrences.
Mr. Allard is the Bureau Director of PA DEP’s Bureau of Radiation Protection and the Governor’s official liaison to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. He has worked as a consultant to the US Department of Energy, and has been involved in various aspects of governmental, industrial, reactor, medical and academic radiation protection for over 35 years.
Mr. Smith is retired from the PA Geological Survey. He currently assists the Bureau of Radiation Protection with radon and radium.
The meeting will be held at GTS Technologies 441 Friendship Road Harrisburg, PA (near Bass Pro). Dinner (4:45 – 5:45) will be at Fiesta Mexico - 3957 Paxton Street, Harrisburgh, PA 17111 (between Ruby Tuesday restaurant and the Nissan car dealership, around the corner from Lancaster Brewing Company). They have a large menu, and although they usually have pretty quick service, with the early start time for the meeting, you should probably order your meal as soon as possible, vs. waiting for most of the group to arrive.
RSVP for dinner & meeting no later than noon Tuesday, October 13th to Amy Randolph at email@example.com, or at 717-783-7948.
